Only 2 winners from outside the 3 yr old age group is pretty significant trend - and the 5 yr old was hevy fancied favourite on heavy ground --- all winners had won in the main 2 races only 1 had only won once
only 2 winners went off favourite - 5yr old - heavy ground) this animal had already won on soft
8-7lbs is the weight to look for and soft ground is a must.
the 3yr olds do not have form on the ground. However there is some merit in looking at Fallen Idol from the Gosden yard - has all the stats for 3 yr olds and its run on the all weather shows he can handle a bit deeper ground. but for form on ground that is likely to go even heavier attention turns to Distant Memories a 4yr old at the top of the market under Mr Spencer who is 23% this track - Distant Memories loves cut and as a 4 yr old carries the right weight - Quote - He's a soft ground-horse really, but he's got a bit of class. Given his conditions, I think he's capable of handling a step-up in class.-T P Tate, trainer
of the outsiders i really do like the chances of Poet - my notebook " Massive animal biggest ever LOVES SOFT GROUND 130909 CURRAGH SOFT HEAVY 9-09 TOP WEIGHT- STAKES RACE GROUP 3 PROB BEST RACE OF THE DAY £39,126
great run on fast ground sandown will be a killer when it gets its ground 020610
good luck today guys --
result 1 Poet 7/1
2 Class Is Class 6/13 Distant Memories 4/1F
4th Fallen Idol
POET, who raced in second for most of the race, showed how much he relishes these testing conditions by holding off the more patiently ridden Class Is Class to record his second win at this level. He´d hinted at a return to form at Newbury last time when the ground was good, and in these far more suitable conditions he returned to something like his best form, comprehensively reversing form with Distant Memories in the process.
The winner holds an entry for another 1m2f Group 3 at Leopardstown next month, and that would make more appeal than taking on the big guns in the Irish Champion.
Class Is Class, off the track since winning a Listed race at Goodwood in May, looked to be given the right ride as the pace was pretty hot up front, but having been brought with his chance a furlong out, he found that bit extra. He clearly acts perfectly well in these conditions, but Poet revels in them.
Distant Memories, whose record is that of steady progression, has a good record with give, but he didn´t improve for the switch from good ground at Newbury, where he finished in front of Poet. There´s a Listed race to be won with him this season.
Fallen Idol looked as though he might be suited by a step up to this sort of trip when running on late over 1m in France last time but, having been given a patient ride, he couldn´t make any headway in the final two furlongs.
--Only 10lb separated the runners on adjusted ratings, but they finished well strung out as a result of going a really good gallop in what were very testing conditions.
