Old Borough Cup 030911 haydock

Old Borough Cup is a 1M 6F class 2 handicap  today at 2.30 The race was promoted from class 3 to class 2 in 2004, so some of the trends will focus more on the last 6 runnings when staged under current conditions. In general younger, less exposed, horses that put in a career best last time do well in this.
3 year olds have the best record, winning 5 of the last 10 from less than 20% of the total runners. Strangely there were no 3yo runners last year and once again there is no 3yo representative this time around.

All 10 winners since 2000 were aged 3 to 5, though they did represent almost 79% of the total runners.
Horses carrying 9-0+ have won 6 of the last 10 (4 of 6 when run as a class 2) from 43.6% of the total runners
10 of 10 winners ran 4 to 7 times that season
10 of 10 winners finished in first 4 last time
7 of 10 winners posted career high Mr last time (2 others did so on penultimate start)
10 of 10 winners had run in 11 or fewer handicaps
7 of 10 winners had run in 6 or fewer handicaps
9 of 10 winners had won a race that season (exception was placed in Ebor on previous start)
10 of 10 winners had won over 1M 4F to 1M 6F
0 of 10 winners had previously won or placed at Haydock
Since race became a class 2 6 of 6 winners had won a class 2 or 3 race (but no higher)
9 of 10 winners (last 9) were priced 11/1 or shorter
Horses prominent in the betting have done well in this with the last 9 winners coming from the first 6 in the betting.
Favourites (5-3-12) have a very strong record, having won 5 of the last 10, giving a level stakes profit of 13.00.
usually won by fancied horses who are stepping up in distance - last years winner had run well at newbury 1m5f (Gosden is winning anything he enters at the moment this year also)
Activate was brought down in the same race this year under Spencer where it went off at 13/2 has to prove it has recovered from that horrible crash)

Gosden has the favourite and a couple of others but Buick mount Zuider Zee holds a favourites chance on its run last time at Ascot where he did all its best work at the end of the 1m4f

THE HORSE and Joker in the pack for this is the 5 yr old Deaville Flyer who is dropped back down in distance but has the visor ( love a horse dropped back in trip wearing it for the first time) GREAT RUN YORK 090711 1M6F Deauville Flyer was not done any favours by the outside draw and was another that had to come from well back, so he emerges with credit. He could have done with easier ground and is yet another likely Ebor candidate.
Result ----  A high-class, competitive handicap that usually features horses who took part in one of the big middle-distance or staying handicaps at York. The pace looked sound and three drew clear in the last furlong.

BAUER, touched off in the Melbourne Cup in 2008 but rarely seen since, was back to a more suitable trip here having been racing over shorter. Racing off his lowest mark since 2007, he gradually got into the action and proved the strongest in the last furlong. This was a terrific piece of training and it will be interesting to see where the gelding goes next.

Nehaam, placed in Listed and Group company in 2009, came back from a long absence to win a handicap off 99 on his second appearance. He finished 12th in the Ebor off 4lb higher but, at this slightly lower level, ran well off the same mark, making headway from the rear to deliver his challenge and only being run out of it late on.

Zuider Zee had gained his wins at around 1m4f but appeared to stay this trip in three previous attempts. Never far away, he came to have every chance but was just outstayed. He has been held off this sort of mark for the past year but the handicapper is unlikely to relent if he continues to run this well.

Ajaan seems best at extreme distances these days, having been a winner at 2m2f and third in the Queen Alexandra in the past year. He proved he still has the pace for this trip, aided by the good gallop, and he only faded late on.

Tominator, the Northumberland Plate winner off 90, had run well at Chester last time, handles fast and easy ground but is 10lb higher now and, although running well, that seemed to find him out.

Ashbrittle, a winner at this trip in a first-time visor last autumn off 2lb lower, has not worn the headgearsince. He ran a decent race, although he did several rivals no favours when ducking left under pressure inside the last 2f.

Deauville Flyer is well suited by a flat track and has running well but is 11lb above his last winning mark. He travelled better than usual in the first-time blinkers but was beginning to struggle when broadsided by Ashbrittle.
