my Bet today

5.05 Newbury
BE WISER APPRENTICE HANDICAP (CLASS 5) (4yo+ 0-75 2miles soft ground - Weights highest weight 9st 10lbWeight raised 5 Minimum weight 8-5 Penalties after September 25th, each race won 6lb Saute's Handicap Mark 70

This is only  the second running of the race and therefore not a trends pointer  however it’s interesting to see the animals in the race

Last year it was won by the well backed ARAB LEAGUE proved well suited by this first attempt at 2m. However it had run and won at bath over 1m5f in the gentlemen’s race form coming into the race was 22213 --

Ragdollianna  is my idea of the best each way chance today – was a very decent Second to lady Hestia over 1m4f at bath this term – she is a mare bred from Kayf Tara who is a top bumper sire with soft ground  distance progeny. Owner breeder Mr Newland bred this one for the flat! She has won a bumper over 2m1f on good ground  and a class 5 handicap soft ground at warwick over 1m4f+ - She travelled smoothly off the pace and responded well when asked to react to Bolckow´s forward move going into the home turn and found plenty once asked for more in the straight . She was off a mark of 71 that day and  Vfb records a mark of 74 – today she gets in here really well – runs off 68 – a mark she has run consistently too this year . The added distance the ground and the mouth watering price of 14/1 betfair  makes this the profile horse of the day.

Whitcombe Spirit is a bit of a dodgepot but ran a cracking race last year into third was running of 57 that day on unsuitable good ground and today (having shown nothing much so far this season)  has a healthy revision of 6lbs and ground to suite. Is from a distance and soft ground pedigree and its place chances at massive odds with  M Halford on board

The prob fav Petella  is a very decent animal in its own right has been on the go for a long time this season and its win last time at Yarmouth read well in a similar class 5 affair but and heres my personal but ! it has been to the well too often  went off the 9/2 fav that day off a mark of 52 and achieved a mark of 55 – today is pretty well clobbered up 8lbs Adam Beschizza takes the ride again so his 3lb claim is irrelevant to the mark.

Had a good run for my money  4th and no cigar- down to 2.4 in running -- did not lay off! but did the lay the favvy  as advised and she was never going to get there needs a layoff and a drop in the weights--

the place selection (Whitcombe Spirit)  was just hopeless and now has a real squiggle!

SAUTE looked an out-and-out AW horse prior to this, but he disproved that theory with a surprisingly gutsy win. A penalty can be avoided if he´s out before being reassessed.
Warne´s Way was almost pulled up under similar conditions on his return from a break at Yarmouth last time, but he was a winner on soft ground over 1m4f at this track last October and returned to form under a well-judged front-running ride. He battled on really well to get the better of a protracted dual with Ragdollianna, but that softened him up for the winner´s late challenge.
Rock Soleil confirmed the promise of his keeping-on fifth at Warwick, again doing enough to suggest he might win a similar race under these sorts of conditions.
Ragdollianna was trying her furthest trip to date on the Flat, but she´s a bumper winner. She showed up well for a long way before tiring in the last furlong, and it was either her stamina that failed her, or her fitness after a 97-day break.
