Tuesday 5th October 2010

Good Morning from a wet and miserable Kent. But that means the NH is gearing up (yippee)
this is the dog end of racing where the animals are running for their feed money and in this ground and for the little prize money on offer it pays to be looking at the gambles rather than the form -- plenty of animals being given their first run - backward types and late foals just about strong enough to try the racecourse for the first time.
Harking Back to the Arc - I have to say that the most impressive animal in Sundays Arc was Workforce ---he walked into the parade ring - and He strutted  he swaggered - any of you lucky enough to have seen Best Mate walk into the parade ring would have recognised Workforce as the winner of the Arc as he stepped into the ring --- I can mention these two animals in the same breath -  I wrote a piece about Best Mate when I saw him enter the parade ring for his first bumper at Cheltenham in 99 - he looked like the top Mafia capo de capo - and He was awe inspiring -- in my notes i put -" bumper 2m chelt good ground 140999 -Best Mate is a 4 year old that has to be backed anywhere he runs he is in the mould of the very very best animals cocky striding animal that one day will win the Gold Cup" and that was after  BUMPER.
am still very proud of those notes as was derided for making what does seem in retrospect a wild claim.  Anyone who knows horses, and those who didn't, can see what a class animal that one is --and until I saw Workforce enter the ring on Sunday have not seen the same conformation the same swagger the same perfect get out of my way attitude   and you can include the great animals that have held centre stage since Best mates Heydays ---here's  hoping this years crop will produce another star - because the stage is not filled with anything of their calibre.

I was first aware of a horses personality very young - I did see Arkle run and saw him break the heart of the best of the English horses Mill house (who never ran another top race after Arkle swept past him and went on to win by 5l ) - was too young to understand the herd mentality of horses and to yet know that the great Mill House would always from then on bow to the superiority of Arkle and therefore had a chink that could be exploited by lesser animals from then on.

my list of animals that shone with an extra limelight -- Nashwan, Sea the Stars, Best Mate, and now Workforce  simply smacked you around the head when the entered the ring. (The only Filly that ever came close to the swagger was Peeping Fawn and she was special!) others have been good others have been great --- but that list is of horses are my personal list of animals that knew they were the best  -

There is one that can run close to the swagger factor for me still running and improving and that the soon to be great Rite Of Passage - will take some big scalps this year over fences is already this one and Peddlers Cross meeting at Cheltenham next march is something I want to see. (you can see who am nailing my colours to.)
Please feel free to add your own animals and favourites and ones to watch out for.

Bob

and just for you guys who think you have it made -
A woman came home, screeching her car into the driveway, and ran into the house. She slammed the door and shouted at the top of her lungs, 'Honey, pack your bags. I won the lottery!'
The husband said, 'Oh my God! What should I pack, beach stuff or mountain stuff?'
'Doesn't matter,' she said. 'Just get out.'
