GOING: GOOD (Good to soft in places on Chase course; Good to firm in places on Hurdle course; GoingStick: Chs 5.9; Hdl 7.0) (Chases are on the same course as previous seasons. Hurdles are on the new Inner course and not the Flat course, as previous seasons)
Redevelopment work at Haydock resulted in a resiting of the chase course for the 2007/8 season. All jump races are now run on the old hurdle course, using portable fences instead of the traditional ones, some of which had a slight drop on landing. There are five fences in the back straight and four in the home straight (with no water jump). The 440-yard run-in is no more, however, its length significantly reduced compared to the old track. The new chase course has a tighter configuration than the old one and doesn't test jumping to the same extent, whilst the going tends to ride faster on the hurdles track. its difficult to judge just about any other track against these conditions and horses for courses only applies to somewhere like Southwell so beware horses that did well here in the past as the track is far less a gallopers venue WEATHER (Heavy rain) -
TOWCESTERGOING: GOOD TO SOFT (Good in places up the hill; GoingStick: 8.0)
Towcester is a right-handed course, a mile and three quarters round, and is the stiffest track in the country. The last mile or so is very punishing, with a steep climb to the home turn and a continuing rise past the winning post. Stamina is at a premium and conditions can get very testing. There are ten fences on the circuit, two (small obstacles) in the finishing straight, but they seldom present problems, with the exception of the two downhill ones running away from the stands. The run-in is 200 yards. This is considered to be one of the toughest tracks in the country and horses who have run well here in the past are staying slower horses the run in is very uphill and produces more in running lay bets - definitely a Back to lay track Vfb users must check the Cim (course impedance horses) as this really takes some getting
WEATHER (Grey cloud, possible light rain)
THURLESGOING: SOFT An undulating, right-handed track with a circuit of around a mile and a quarter. Sections of the track are uphill but there is a fairly steep descent to the two-furlong home straight and the track is very much sharp in character, favouring the handy type of horse. There are seven fences to a circuit of the chase course, with two in the home straight, and a run-in of around a furlong. suits speedy types this is a fairly typical irish track Leopardstown and Punchestown winners seem to go well here
